While each form of protein has its own health benefits, whey protein is known to be more superior when it comes to exercise, muscles building and weight loss. This is mainly due to the fast absorption rate and amino acid profile.
Here are some major differences between soy and whey protein powder:
1. Absorption and Digestion Rate
Whey protein has a very high biological value of 104-11 while soy ranges around mid-70s in how proteins are absorbed and utilized in our body. Whey protein can also digest faster than soy protein, thus making them a good choice for post-exercise fuel up.
2. Protein Quality
Whey protein has an extremely high Net Protein Utilization value of 92 while soy ranges in the low-60s in how amino acid converts to protein that is better utilized by the body.
3. Glutamine Levels
Glutamine is an amino acid that is essential for muscle growth and repair. Soy protein, especially soy isolates, has a much higher content that whey protein. Soy proteins also has a high arginine amino acid too.
4. Testosterone Levels
According to studies, soy protein might lower testosterone levels which can include erectile dysfunction. Whey protein was shown as a better option as it does not affect testosterone levels negatively. Whey protein also reduce the response of cortisol during the recovery phase after an intense exercise.
5. Dietary Restrictions
Soy protein is an ideal alternative for people who are lactose intolerant. Even the whey isolates and the whey hydro-isolates, the most processed form of whey protein which are said to be lactose-free, can still cause gastrointestinal disturbances in those sensitive to lactose.
Research has shown that whey proteins is a better choice if you wish to lose weight, build muscles and boost testosterone. However, if you want a plant-based alternative or lactose intolerant, soy protein is not a bad choice too. There are other awesome choices for plant-based protein ranging from pea to rice powder that are also very good for overall health and athletic performance. You should always monitor how protein powder affects you inside out and outside in.
